Navigating the Challenges of Digital Literacy and Professional Standards in Library Innovation
As society becomes increasingly digitized, the role of libraries is undergoing significant transformation. Libraries are no longer just repositories of physical books; they are dynamic centers of information, community engagement, and lifelong learning. Within this context, digital literacy emerges as a critical competency that libraries must promote and protect.
Resistance to change is a common challenge faced by public libraries, especially when it comes to adopting new technologies. Whether it's the introduction of self-checkout systems or the shift to modern Integrated Library Systems (ILS), pushback often arises from concerns about how these advancements might affect patrons and staff. This reluctance is frequently tied to varying levels of digital literacy among individuals, which can impact their comfort and confidence with new tools and processes. Recognizing and addressing these concerns is crucial for cultivating a positive atmosphere that fosters innovation, while also ensuring that all community members and staff feel supported and empowered in their engagement with technology.
This discussion aims to direct library and technology leaders to employ empathetic leadership and effective change management strategies. By understanding individuals' underlying fears and concerns, leaders can better guide patrons, staff, and stakeholders through innovation.
This program will place a particular emphasis on strategies to ensure the continued accessibility of digital literacy for the future.
Scott Jarzombek is a compelling, forward-thinking leader who strongly advocates for any organization he leads. He has a Bachelor of Arts in education from the University of Hartford, a Master of Library Science from the University of Albany, and a certificate of graduate study in Public Sector Management from Rockefeller College.
He is currently the Town Librarian for Fairfield, Connecticut, and an adjunct lecturer at the University of Albany’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security & Cybersecurity. He also serves on the Urban Librarians Unite Board of Directors and is the president of the Connecticut Library Association.
Jarzombek began his career as a digital literacy instructor at a branch of the Albany Public Library, running an award-winning and nationally-recognized computer camp. He served on the city of Albany’s Broadband and Complete Count Committees and was a member of the Commission on Municipal Internet Service, PEG Oversight Committee, and Cable Franchise Agreement Advisory Committee. Jarzombek was recognized by the NY State Senate in 2021 as an “Outstanding Librarian” and in 2023 received the “Anchor Award” from the University of Hartford.
